Menu Close Prediction

Understanding the concept of menu close prediction and how to calibrate your NPC count on RETAIL.

This page contains information about calibrating your NPC count and using that knowledge for the best possible chance of hitting a target frame/Pokémon. Menu close prediction is used extensively throughout this guide, so it is very important to have an understanding of how to use the technique to your advantage.

Important - NPC count does not always correspond to the number of NPCs you can see nearby. Do not try to visually count NPCs as a replacement for this part of the guide.
Important - By this stage you should also understand how to find and monitor your current seed. If you have not yet read the provided information on this topic, go back and review the material.

Finding Your Current Seed

In the above image, we have identified our current seed using the Retail Seed Finder. The game is paused on the party summary screen immediately after doing so.

Clicking the Consider Menu Close? checkbox on the main window enables the Calibrate NPCs button. Clicking this button opens a subwindow, which is where we will determine the number of NPCs currently active in our location.

Upon opening the subwindow, we can see that the current seed and number of initial advancements have been entered automatically. If you have not filled in the Encounter Settings in the main window to match your desired target, you will need to manually set your weather condition.

It is highly suggested that you do not have the Holding Direction? checkbox ticked since this would require you to be holding a direction while calibrating. Doing so does not add anything but difficulty to this process.

Closing and reopening the X Menu as demonstrated in the above image advances the RNG state. The number of advances consumed each time depends on your current NPC count.

We strongly suggest that you use B and X to calibrate NPCs, not X and X. The reason for this is that pressing X twice too quickly can cause 0 advances, which would mislead you into thinking that there are 0 NPCs.

After closing and reopening the menu once, reidentify your seed using the Retail Tools section of the main window. DO NOT CLICK THE UPDATE SEEDS BUTTON YET.

Seed Re-identification

Reidentify your seed in the Retail Tools section. The Adv.: field should display two values. The first box contains the total number of advances that were consumed, and the second box contains the number of animations used to reidentify your seed.

To find the number of advances consumed by closing the X Menu, simply subtract the number of advances used to reidentify your seed from the total number of advancements that have occurred.

Example - 11 advances were consumed in total, and 6 advances were used to reidentify the seed. We can subtract 11 - 6 to find that 5 advances were consumed from closing the X Menu.

Head back to the MenuCloseTimeline window. If this is your first time opening this window, set the Initial Adv. field to 0 and set your current weather condition. Now click the Search button to produce a table.

The goal is to make the value in the Jump column match the number of advances that were consumed from closing the X Menu by tweaking the NPC count. In this case, we will tweak the NPC count until the first result in the table displays a +5 Jump value. This should then give us the current NPC count.

Click Update Seeds, and repeat this process 2-3 times to ensure that the NPC count matches correctly. In this case, our NPC count is 3. Keep in mind that NPC count can vary day-by-day and if you change positions. If a day advances or you move to another position, you may need to recalibrate the NPC count.

Great! You should now have a basic understanding of how to calibrate NPC counts, and how to apply that knowledge to accurately hit target frames.
